Cave of Eileithyia
The Cave of Eileithyia is formed very close to the point where the road from Heraklion meets the coastal road of Tsoutsouros, where the powerful city of Inatos existed. At its entrance, which is sealed for safety reasons by the Archaeological Service, a very short path with small steps from the road leads in.
The cave belonged to the category of abysses, as initially there was only an opening in its roof. However, at some point it appears that the present entrance was opened on the southern side, making access now easy.
The cave of Inatius Eileithyia is considered one of the most important cult caves of antiquity, from Protogeometric times to the early Christian period (5th century). Here Eileithyia was worshipped, daughter of Zeus and Hera, who was the goddess of childbirth, female fertility, and protector of pregnant women and infants.
Women who could not conceive a child dedicated objects to Eileithyia, or before giving birth so that the child would be born healthy. The goddess is also connected with orgiastic properties, and according to some, her worship is the ancestor of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
